Exploring the Gorges of Valais, Switzerland: A Family Adventure

Switzerland is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, and among its most captivating natural wonders are the gorges of Valais. These dramatic formations offer awe-inspiring views and unforgettable experiences, making them the perfect destinations for families seeking adventure.

At our mountain adventure camp, we take campers on excursions to explore some of the region’s most stunning gorges, allowing them to witness the raw power of nature firsthand. But these gorges aren’t just for campers—whether you’re enjoying a weekend getaway with your family or looking for an adventure while your children are at camp, the gorges of Valais provide an incredible opportunity for exploration.

Let’s take a closer look at three remarkable gorges you can visit in the region —Gorge Durnand, Gorge du Trient, and Gorge Mystérieuse—all perfect for a family outing.

  1. Les Gorge du Durnand – perfect for families with older kids or adults

A favorite among our older campers, Gorge Durnand is located near the village of Bovernier and is home to a series of stunning waterfalls that cascade through the rugged terrain.

Gorge Durnand features an easy-to-follow trail with wooden walkways and steps that guide you through the gorge, making it accessible to families with children or those who are less experienced in hiking. You’ll encounter multiple waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and lush greenery. The trail takes you on a gentle climb, offering impressive views of the falls from various vantage points.

While the trail is accessible, we don’t recommend it for younger children, as the path includes steep steps and wet, slippery areas. It’s best suited for children aged 8+ and older hikers who enjoy a bit of challenge.

For curious minds, the trail includes informative panels about the gorge’s geology, flora, and fauna—an excellent opportunity for kids to learn while having fun.

Tips for Families:

  • The trail is well-maintained but can be steeper in sections, making it more invigorating for older kids.
  • Bring a picnic to enjoy by the gorge, and wear sturdy, non-slip shoes as some areas may be slippery.

  1. Gorge du Trient – perfect for an easy outing with younger kids too!

Gorge du Trient is a perfect choice if you’re seeking a gentler adventure, This is a favourite of our younger campers, and it offers a peaceful walk along wooden boardwalks that follow the course of the Trient River. The trail is mostly flat, making it ideal for small children who might not be up for steep climbs.

Carved over millennia by the rushing waters of the Trient River, this gorge features towering rock walls and the soothing sounds of water echoing through the valley. The gentle path through the gorge is an easy and rewarding experience for families with younger children.

Tips for Families:

  • The Trient Gorge is located near the stunning Pissevache waterfall, which makes for a great family detour. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the majestic scenery!
  • The flat path and smooth terrain is suitable for younger children, but be mindful of your surroundings as the path can be narrow in places.

  1. Gorge Mystérieuse – a more challenging hike ideal for families with older kids experienced in hiking or adults

For families looking for a more adventurous hike, Gorge Mystérieuse offers a thrilling experience. This gorge is tucked away in a secluded valley, and reaching it involves a steeper descent with a short metal ladder section, making it best suited for those with older children who are experienced hikers.

As the name suggests, Gorge Mystérieuse is shrouded in mystery. The hike down to the gorge offers striking views of the surrounding cliffs and dense forests. Once at the bottom, the gorge reveals an impressive series of walkways that lead you through rock formations shaped by a powerful waterfall, where the roar of the river below adds to the drama of the scene.

The hike is rich in biodiversity, so keep an eye out for various plant and animal species along the way—an excellent opportunity for children to learn about the natural world.

Tips for Families:

  • The path is steep and challenging, so this hike is best suited for children aged 10+ who are accustomed to hiking.
  • Ensure you have appropriate footwear, plenty of water, and be prepared for a more demanding physical challenge.

Practical Tips for Visiting Gorges in Valais

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring, summer, and early autumn are the ideal times to explore the gorges, as the trails are fully accessible, and the weather is perfect for hiking. Plan for a visit of 2-3 hours to fully enjoy the experience.
  • Safety First: Always stick to marked trails, wear sturdy shoes, and carry enough water for the hike. Be mindful of slippery areas, especially after rainfall.
